Game Show Network’s latest game show, The American Bible Challenge, debuted this past Thursday. The show is hosted by comedian Jeff Foxworthy who hosted Fox’s “Are You Smarter Than A Fifth Grader?” and is from the creators of Extreme Makeover: Home Edition.
Teams compete in teams of three in this fun and lively gameshow to win prize money for a charity of their choice – not for themselves. A background is given on the lives of each of the teams and the charity they are competing for in a similar manner to Extreme Makeover: Home Edition. Each show the team can win up to $20,000 and possibly up to $100,000 at the end of the season.
Labeled as a “game show 3,400 years in the making” the show challenges teams to answer Bible-based questions which occasionally feature a pop-culture reference tacked on to the question.
As a “Christian” game show, the show seems to stick close to the safe side. Perhaps a bit too close for some which would be expected with the blunt and controversial Jon Stewart-style humor so many of us have become accustomed to. Category titles such as “What do you NOAH ’bout the ark” may cause some to roll their eyes at the cheesiness of the titles, honestly I did as well, but it’s to be expected as I mentioned. The show is obviously trying to ensure that the show is humorous for its audience which is great. It could have just as easily been a flat and straight-to-the-point game show.
Overall, the show has its kinks which need to be worked out and they will in time. In the mean time The American Bible Challenge, in all its occasional corniness, proves to be a fun and inspiring game show. It is no typical run of the mill game show, it is truly something unique and is sure to become a family-favorite in several Christian households.
